D1 minis are generally my goto for Arduino development and this one works fine but unfortunately deepsleep consumes too much current (around 3mA vs the expected 0.3mA) on this module.

• The D1 Mini is an ESP8266-based microcontroller featuring 11 digital input/output pins, a single analog input pin. It offers the convenience of a micro-USB connection for both power and data (running at 3.3V), and despite its size has built-in WiFi and 4MB of flash memory. It can be programmed with Lua / NodeMCU, MicroPython, and other leading micro-controller development platforms. It supports both serial and OTA programming.
